Industry insiders said that with the sustained and rapid development of the new energy industry, the demand for energy storage will also "rise with the tide", and the industry's high momentum will continue.

Enterprises accelerate the layout
On February 14, the construction of the 300MW compressed air energy storage demonstration project of China National Energy Storage Co., Ltd. with a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan was started in Tai'an, Shandong Province. The project is provided with technical support by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the construction and commissioning are undertaken by China Storage Guoneng (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd. The project covers an area of about 100 mu, with a construction scale of 300MW/1800MWh, and an estimated annual power generation of 594 million kWh.
In addition to China Energy Storage Group, since this year, enterprises in the industrial chain such as Yiwei Lithium Energy, Shenghong Group and China Innovation Airlines have been enthusiastic about investing in new energy storage. For example, Yiwei Lithium announced that it planned to sign a 60GWh power storage battery production line and auxiliary facilities project and a 23GWh cylindrical lithium iron phosphate energy storage power battery project with Jingmen, Hubei and Qujing, Yunnan respectively; Shenghong Group's 60GWh energy storage battery super factory and new energy battery research institute project signed a contract in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province, with a total planned investment of 30.6 billion yuan.
Since this year, 17 provinces and cities including Ningxia, Guizhou, Sichuan, Jiangsu and Shandong have issued a list of major projects (key construction projects) in 2023. According to the incomplete statistics of Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, there are 363 major projects related to the energy storage industry, including 92 energy storage power station construction projects and 271 energy storage industry chain construction projects.
Work together to promote development
The energy storage industry has ushered in a new round of expansion tide, which is the result of the joint efforts of policies, technologies and markets.
In recent years, the National Energy Administration, the National Development and Reform Commission and other relevant departments have successively issued a series of policies, such as the Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Development of New Energy Storage, the Implementation Plan for the Development of New Energy Storage during the "Fourteenth Five-Year Plan", to develop and construct the national new energy storage big data platform, initially established the national new energy storage industry management system, and comprehensively promoted the national new energy storage pilot demonstration. Local governments also actively formulate special plans or clarify the development objectives of new energy storage in relevant energy plans, and promote the development of new energy storage into the fast lane by formulating subsidy policies and other ways.
At the same time, technological breakthroughs and economic improvements have created favorable conditions for its rapid development. In recent years, the development speed of new energy storage technology has been continuously improved, and the energy density, power density and cycle life have been significantly improved.
Liu Yafang, deputy director of the Department of Energy Conservation and Scientific and Technological Equipment of the National Energy Administration, said that the energy density of lithium-ion batteries for energy storage has more than doubled compared with 10 years ago, and the power density has increased by about 50%. At present, a relatively complete industrial chain has been formed; Liquid flow battery, sodium ion battery, compressed air energy storage, flywheel energy storage and other technologies have developed rapidly. The new energy storage industry as a whole is in the stage of transition from R&D demonstration to the initial stage of commercialization, and gradually forms an industrialization system.
Liu Yong, Secretary-General of the Energy Storage Application Branch of the China Chemical and Physical Power Industry Association, said: "The innovation of energy storage technology can significantly improve the efficiency of the energy storage system, improve the life cycle of the energy storage battery, improve the power density of the energy storage system, and thus reduce costs."
In addition, strong market demand boosts the development of new energy storage. "As an important support for the stable and large-scale development of new energy, the energy storage industry ushers in development opportunities. It is expected that the installed capacity of new energy storage will reach more than 30 million kilowatts by 2025." said Yu Zhenhua, executive vice president of the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance.
The problem of "build without use" needs to be solved
It is worth noting that some energy storage projects are not profitable at present, and there are problems such as "building without using".
Yu Zhenhua said that the development of the energy storage industry faces five core pain points, including mechanism issues, how to establish a series of sustainable development mechanisms to help the industry embark on a healthy path of sustainable development; To build a large-scale energy storage system, this problem must be solved; As an emerging industry, the access threshold for energy storage needs to be further clarified; In addition, there are construction issues, as well as life-cycle management issues.
At the same time, photovoltaic power distribution and energy storage have encountered a series of problems such as high cost and low utilization rate, resulting in low enthusiasm of relevant enterprises. According to the enterprise's calculation, according to the requirement of configuring 10%/2h energy storage system for the 100MW project, the cost of the power station will increase by no less than 0.3 yuan/watt. On this basis, the cost of the power station will increase by about 0.3 yuan/watt for every 10% increase in the energy storage ratio.
In response to the above problems, Liu Yong said that it is necessary to further explore and improve the business model of energy storage, improve market mechanisms such as capacity pricing, auxiliary services, and spot power, expand the income of energy storage investment by participating in power market transactions, play and reflect the function and value of energy storage, and stimulate more investment enthusiasm.
Liu Yong also said: "In the future, while diversifying energy storage technology, it can also be combined with AI algorithms, intelligent equipment, etc. to strengthen the intelligent upgrading of energy storage system integration technology, control technology, security management, etc., and further improve the security level."
Yu Zhenhua said that for upstream enterprises, they should select the right target application scenario based on their own technical characteristics and advantages, and on this basis, promote technological progress and develop products suitable for different scenarios. Downstream enterprises need more urgent support at the policy level to jointly promote the solution of core issues such as profit model.
